How to lock notes on iPhone
There are two methods to lock notes on iPhones. In the first method, the note can be locked without opening it. While in the second method the note will need to be opened.
Method 1
- On your iPhone, Open the Notes App.
- If you want to lock a note, tap and hold it.
- Click on Lock Note.
- Enter the Passcode.

Other than Face ID and Touch ID, you have two options for locking notes in iOS 16: your iPhone Passcode or a custom password.
Each has its own advantages. The following steps will guide you through changing your Passcode to a password.
Which is better for notes: Passcode or password
- If you use a passcode for lock notes on iPhone: You must enter that device’s passcode in each Apple device to access the Note.
- If you use a password for lock notes on iPhone: Using that password, you can unlock the Note on any Apple device.
Example: If you open a note on your iPhone, you’ll need to enter an iPhone password for it. When you open the same note later on your Mac, you will have to enter your Mac’s password for it. So both times if you don’t want to enter a different password then you can use the custom password option.
- Go to Settings and Click on Notes.
- Tap on Password.
- Now, Click on Use Custom Password.
- Confirm with your Passcode or Face ID/Touch ID.
- Please enter the new password.
- To verify, enter it again.
- Adding a password hint to iPhone notes is also possible.
- Once the Above Process is completed, then Tap on the Done button.
Once the password change is complete, you will receive a confirmation message. Changes will be confirmed when you click OK. From now on, you’ll need to use this new password when locking or unlocking notes.
How to open a locked note on iPhone
As you now know how to lock notes on your iPhone, you will need to unlock these notes when needed. Your locked notes can be unlocked by following these steps,
- Open Notes.
- Click on the locked note that you want to open.
- Tap on View Note.
- Enter the note Passcode or password.

- To change the notes password, Go to Settings > Notes > Password.
- Click on Change Password.
- Enter the current password.
- Enter your new password.
- To verify, enter it again.
- Tap Done after adding a hint to your iPhone notes.
How to Reset Notes Password on iPhone
- To Reset your Notes Password, Go to Settings > Notes > Password.
- Please enter your Apple ID password.
- To confirm, tap Reset Password.
- You may be asked to enter the device’s passcode.
