- Signal’s new update allows you to switch usernames and hide numbers.
- Change username: Go to Signal Profile > Username > Change Unique Name > tap Done.
The signal is primarily designed for private communications. If you’re a Signal user, you might be aware that sharing your phone number is necessary to communicate with others. In my opinion, this can infringe on your privacy.
Fortunately, Signal has rolled out an update to tackle this. Now, you can set up and change your username in Signal, showing this to others instead of your phone number.
In this post, I’ll guide you on how to set up and change your username in Signal to hide your number and privacy under wraps. Let’s get started!
Note: Your username isn’t the same as your display name.
Signal Username Requirements:
- It must be unique.
- The username length should be between 3 and 32 characters.
- The username should have at least two digits at the end.
- The username can only have lowercase letters (a – z), numbers (0 – 9), and underscores (_).
Change Signal Username
- Open Signal on your device.
- Tap on your profile icon at the top left side.
- Now tap on “Username” under your profile section.
- If you’ve saved a name, then switch the username and click on “Done” at the top right corner.
Note: This feature is in beta and will be available for everyone in the next update.
Hide Your Number in Signal
After setting up your username, you can keep your number private from others by doing the following:
- Open the Signal app and navigate to the settings.
- Now tap on “Privacy” under your profile icon.
- Then tap on “Phone Number” and select “Nobody” from “Who can see My Number”.
Note: Once you choose “Nobody”, you can also select “Who can find me by number” as you prefer.
That’s all! I hope this guide helps you get the hang of the new feature in Signal. By using a username, you can keep your phone number private, and no one will find you by name. Your unique name will stay unknown. If you have any questions about this feature, drop a comment below.
